Submerged Cryogenic and Turbomachinery Testing

The IES Murrieta Test Facility (MTF) provides specialized submerged cryogenic testing for pumps, turbines, turbomachinery, and other rotating equipment operating in demanding fluid and thermal environments. Our unique test infrastructure allows hardware to be operated while fully immersed in cryogenic fluids, including liquid hydrogen (LH₂), liquid oxygen (LOX), and liquid nitrogen (LN₂), providing performance data under conditions that closely replicate actual operating environments.

Our capabilities allow engineers to simulate and control pressure, temperature, flow, speed, and load conditions while evaluating turbomachinery performance and system behavior. Testing can be used to characterize pump and turbine performance, establish operating and performance curves, determine cavitation onset, evaluate efficiency, and assess structural and mechanical response under combined thermal and operational loads. Advanced instrumentation and data acquisition provide real-time measurement of critical parameters including thrust, torque, speed, vibration, pressure, temperature, and flow.

IES engineers and test specialists bring extensive experience in cryogenic fluid dynamics, turbomachinery, instrumentation, systems integration, and test development. We work closely with customers to develop customized test systems, fixtures, instrumentation, control strategies, and procedures tailored to the specific requirements of each program. Our engineering-driven approach enables rapid configuration changes and efficient testing as designs evolve.

When turbomachinery must perform reliably in extreme cryogenic environments, IES provides the specialized test infrastructure, engineering expertise, and high-fidelity data required to confidently validate performance and advance critical hardware toward qualification.
